With so many leafless, spiky plants growing all around us in this desert, roses seem luxuriously soft and frilly — even with their thorns — by contrast.

You can enjoy the flowers up close on a rose garden tour presented by the Mesa-East Valley Rose Society 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14.

On the self-guided route are the Mesa Community College and Dobson Ranch rose gardens, along with five private gardens around town. The MCC stop boasts 8,000 blooming bushes, with caretakers on hand to answer questions about the flowers.

Admission costs $10 for adults and children are free, with all proceeds benefiting the rose society and Mesa Community College.

To buy tickets and view a tour map, stop by the Mesa Community College rose garden at 1833 W. Southern Ave. anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
