If you’re looking for family-friendly entertainment, watching ACT Up!’s musical productions is probably not on your weekend schedule. ACT Up!, a new division of Ahwatukee Children’s Theatre, is a program geared toward high school, college and adult audiences. Aware of the growing presence of teenagers, ACT has created ACT Up! to encourage students to continue pursuing their interests in the fine arts. By staying relevant in students’ changing lives and exploring more mature themes such as sexuality and drugs, ACT Up! provides an opportunity for aspiring performers.

Following ACT’s policy of always placing family values first, Executive Director Michele Rubino said that “parents will more easily know whether a particular show is age-appropriate for their theater-loving kid.”

She said that during the audition and ticket sales processes ACT Up! informs parents about the content and receives parental consent through supervision provided by the Ahwatukee Children’s Theatre Parent Assistance Committee.

After 11 seasons, ACT’s commitment to the East Valley community has become self-evident. Every year, ACT has provided inexpensive, award-winning family entertainment for the price of a movie ticket. This past year, ACT won various nominations at the annual Arizoni Awards. Regular programs include renditions of A Christmas Carol and The Wizard of Oz. This fall, ACT Up! will be rehearsing and performing the hit musical Reefer Madness – The Musical.

From more family-oriented classics such as Seussical and The Sound of Music to more adult-oriented classics such as Fame and Reefer Madness – The Musical, Ahwatukee Children’s Theatre continues to deliver musicals for the enjoyment of the entire community.
