Former Desert Vista and Rice University sophomore Shea Kearney has qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national championship meet starting June 10 at the University of Oregon.

Kearney, a 2007 DV graduate, cleared 17 feet, two and three quarter inches (5.20 meters) at the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas, over the Memorial Day weekend.

Kearney, who won the 2007 state 5A-I state championship at 16.4.75, missed the entire indoor and outdoor seasons last year following ankle      surgery. He qualified sixth at the West Regional.

Another Desert Vista graduate and 2009 state champion, Alec Hsu, also qualified for the West Regionals as a freshman at Rice. Hsu, who cleared 17-2.75 earlier in the outdoor season, missed qualifying for the national meet by one spot (0.17 meters) last weekend.

Kearney and Hsu were both coached by Jeff Guy at Desert Vista.
