The Ben Avery Clay Busters will host its second annual sporting clays tournament and fun shoot Oct. 6 as a benefit on behalf of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The “Shoot for a Cure” sporting clays tournament at Ben Avery Clay Target Center in Phoenix will include a 100-target registered National Sporting Clays Association competition and a 25-target Fun Shoot to introduce new shooters to clay target sports. Most people have never seen a shooting range dressed in pink, but the Ben Avery Clay Busters, their volunteers and the Ben Avery Clay Target Center not only create a pink shooting range for the day, but their competitions also include pink ammo and pink clay targets, which add to the meaningful purpose of the day’s events to remember those who have fought and lost, and equally important, to provide support for those who are still fighting for a cure.

The Fun Shoot will run 10 a.m. to  12:30 p.m. The event offers new shotgun shooters, or those who would like to try shotgun shooting for the first time, an opportunity to experience this growing clay target sport. It’s the perfect time to try out that shotgun in your gun safe that only gets out for two weeks of the year for the migratory bird season. More experienced shotgunners can use this event as a warm-up for the NSCA sanctioned shoot. Registration is $25 and includes 25 clay targets, ammo and a loaner shotgun, if needed. Beginners are welcome with no experience necessary. Coaches will be available at each shooting station for the safety and instruction of new shooters.

The 100-target NSCA sanctioned tournament starts at 1 p.m. and will be a 15-station tournament on the Rattlesnake course at Ben Avery Clay Target Center. This competition is for both NSCA members and non-members. Shooting will be by squads formed with a minimum of three participants and a maximum of five. Individual shooters will be placed on a squad. Registration is $75 per person and includes 100 clay targets and ammunition. Lewis Class entries are $10 each. Non-registered NSCA participants will be classified in Hunter Class.

Following the main shoot will be raffles and a silent auction. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the fun shoot and tournament. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Themed commemorative T-shirts are also part of the day’s fundraisers.

Sponsors are invited for shooting station promotional opportunities, a portion of which is tax deductible. Sponsorships are $150 and include a 24-by-18 inch customized advertising sign, a listing on the main sponsor sign and the opportunity to provide fliers, coupons or other items for the shooter hand-out bags. For hand-out bag insertions only, the sponsor fee is $25.  Contact for details.

The Red Cross Blood Bank will be on site for blood donations in an effort to help those fighting for a cure.
