One of America’s biggest western events is riding into Glendale’s Sahuaro Ranch Historic Park, and adding an “Old Time Country Fair” to the roundup of family entertainment.
On Oct. 14, 15 and 16, all 17 acres of the park will be transformed into a Wild West Renaissance Festival.
Guests can enjoy comedy, gunfight and stunt shows, trick roping, gun spinning and trick horse performances by world champions, live music, cowboy historians, buffalo soldiers and Native American tribal dancers.
Mingle with stars such as stuntman Neil Summers, Mike “Desperado” Moroff, James “F-Troop” Hampton, Peter “Tombstone” Sherayko, Helene Udy and William Shockly from “Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman.” On Oct. 15 only, attendees can meet Noel Neill, Superman’s original Lois Lane. Celebrity panel discussions will be hosted by the “Chronicle of the Old West’s” Dakota Livesay.
Enter an old fashioned pie-eating contest, tug of war, sack race or one of the many other free, blue ribbon-winning country fair contests. The Kids Korral will have bounce houses, a zip line, face painting, train and pony rides, plus exotic animals from the Wildlife World Zoo. Learn about the history of the American cowboy and listen to cowboy singers.
Oct. 15 events include a steampunk costume contest, and on Oct. 16, bring out your critters for the “Best Dressed Wild West Pet” costume contest. Artisans and crafters will display and sell an array of items, and food vendors will be on hand.
The Single Action Shooting Society will give guests the opportunity to see what it’s like to handle an Old West “shoot’n iron” at their Wax Bullet Shooting Arena, or head over to the Arizona Gunslingers’ Cowboy Fast Draw Association booth. Visit the Chuck Wagon Camp for a taste of dutch oven cooking, and see who wins “top cookie” in the Chuck Wagon Cook-Off. There also will be blacksmith demonstrations.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Arizona Chapter, is the beneficiary of this year’s event.
Hours for the festival are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for military with ID, $5 for ages 5-12 and free for ages 4 younger. All shows are included with admission. Sahuaro Ranch Park is at 5802 N. 59th Ave. in Glendale.
