Ben Trotter was right there.
While Brophy’s Devon Allen and Deer Valley’s Trae Armstrong waged great battles this season and garnered plenty of attention, Trotter was just a few clicks of the clock behind them.
The Mountain Pointe senior was putting up times in the low 10.60 seconds in the 100-meter dash but because the competition between Allen and Armstrong was so fierce, Trotter’s accomplishments kind of got lost in their little dustup.
Trotter was among the state’s best in several events and helped the Pride set the state record in the 4x100-meter relay. It’s no wonder, then, that Trotter was among local athletes named to the All-Tribune first-team boys track team.
Others who were selected were Mountain Pointe junior Travonn White as a first-team long jump pick and Desert Vista junior Carter Macey was the selection in the 3200, while Pride freshman Paul Lucas was the second-team pick in the 200. On the girls side, Desert Vista freshman Dani Jones was a second-team selection.
But it was clear that Trotter had the most commanding performances this season.
“He reached a new level,” Pride sprint coach Larry Todd said. “His confidence is coming out and he is making great strides. The work he has put in has been immense.
“Ben is one of those kids you want to see good things happen to because I have never coached a kid who works as hard as him.”
Trotter finished second in the long jump to White at 23-07, third in the 100 (10.60), and first in the 4x100 (40.46).
White was part of the state-record in the 4x100 as the second leg and won the long jump with an effort of 24-05.5, which was off of his school record of 24-10.5.
Macey continued to show his great endurance by finishing second in the 3,200 with a time of 9 minutes and 30.33 seconds.
Paul Lucas posted the best freshman time in state history in the 400 when he ran a 48.34. He also clocked a 21.76 in the 200. Jones was solid in cross country, running as the Thunder’s No. 3, but showed where her roots originate in becoming one of the state’s top 800 threats in her first year of high school competition.
