While most people at Mountain Pointe were admiring Will Claye and his accomplishments when he was in London, doing something no one from the United States has done since 1904, Travonn White was seeing it as a challenge.

Claye, a 2008 Mountain Pointe graduate, won the bronze in the long jump and silver in the triple jump. It’s an Olympic accomplishment that had not happened since 1936.

White, a senior at Mountain Pointe, broke Claye’s school mark in the long jump in the spring and figures he can take a similar path as Claye.

“Oh yeah, I thought about it,” White said during football media day. “That’s the plan.”

White won the Division I state title with a jump of 24-feet and 5.5 inches but showed what he is capable of with his effort of 24-10.5 during the season to surpass Claye’s mark of 24-3.

They had a meeting at Mountain Pointe before this past track season and Claye said he saw something in White.

“Clearly he is a great athlete, but he has confidence about him that highly successful athletes need,” Claye said before leaving for London. “I didn’t think he’d get my record that quick, but I’m happy for him.”
