The “tip jar” at a Surprise pet spa is overflowing with money as customers and dog lovers do their part to raise money that will go toward rescuing canines.
Shauna’s Paw Spa & Pet Boutique, which opened in May 2008, offers grooming, boarding, day care and nail care for some of Surprise’s most pampered pets.
These pet owners tip store employees on top of the pampering fees, with the money going toward the pet rescue cause.
“I’m glad I’m able to give back to the community in such a meaningful way,” Shauna Rosenbaum said.
Since initiating the act of goodwill roughly 18 months ago, Rosenbaum said Shauna’s Paw Spa & Pet Boutique has taken in about $5,000 in donations, with one regular client once donating $500 and another kicking in $1,000.
The Surprise pet spa is home to eight rescued dogs, which Rosenbaum hopes will be adopted by loving pet owners. To date, 55 dogs have been adopted through Shauna’s Paw Spa & Pet Boutique, which works closely with Surprise-based Where Wolves Rescue and other Northwest Valley shelters.
“We find everybody a home,” she said, noting an ever-growing display at the front of the store shows photographs and a short description of each adopted pet.
Rosenbaum relies on word of mouth in the hopes of finding new homes for the forgotten pets.
But with countless animals entering local no-kill shelters every day, Rosenbaum concedes keeping up can be tough, particularly because she’s often shelling out her own money to provide food, shelter and other routine costs.
A Sun City West animal hospital performs spay and neutering services for $150, which is paid for through the tip jar donations. In addition to the community’s goodwill, Rosenbaum said she often spends between $200 and $500 per month in out-of-pocket costs.
Shauna’s Paw Spa & Pet Boutique doesn’t charge for adoptions and hopes to collect whatever people can afford, which Rosenbaum said is typically around $30 or more.
“We pretty much do it to find homes for the dogs,” she said of accepting any donation.
