A legal defense fund has been established to assist Arizona county sheriffs Paul Babeu and Larry Dever defend themselves against pro-amnesty interest groups and federal government lawsuits filed to prevent Arizona's new illegal immigration law from taking effect, according to a news release from the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

Cochise County, where Dever is sheriff, borders Mexico. Pinal County, where Babeu is sheriff, is a major corridor for human and drug smuggling, according to the release. Both sheriffs support SB 1070, which is scheduled to take effect July 29.

Babeu and Dever have retained attorney Jordan Rose and her firm, Rose Law Group, to defend the their office against federal litigation and to explore opportunities to countersue the federal government.

Funding for the legal defense will be provided by the Legacy Foundation, an Iowa-based conservative nonprofit group.
