You’ve probably seen Native American pottery, textiles, dolls or jewelry. But you may have never seen this: photographs from contemporary Navajo photographers capturing unvarnished moments of American Indian life.
“Through the Lens: Diné Photography” brings just that to Phoenix’s Heard Museum. The show, on loan from the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, opens Tuesday. It marks the first time that a show curated by a regional museum of American Indian arts and culture has traveled to the Heard.
The juried exhibit presents a diverse range of photographers and subject matter, giving viewers a peek into the many ways Navajo photographers “see,” celebrate and comment on their homes, their lives, their land.
In focusing on things we all share — family, sports, rites of passage, connection to place — the images also point out similarities and differences between Navajo and mainstream culture.
