Mesa police are asking for the public’s help in finding a damaged teal green Honda Civic that struck and killed a man, tearing off his left leg.

The leg may still be with the vehicle, as it wasn’t recovered at the scene.

Police haven’t gotten any tips from the early Sunday hit-and-run as of Monday morning, said Mesa police Sgt. Ed Wessing.

The vehicle lost its side mirrors, possibly a headlight and will have other damage.

“When a vehicle hits a body at that speed, generally it’s a pretty violent collision and the persons are thrown over the car,” Wessing said.

The hit-and-run occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of west Broadway Road. Two men were walking to their nearby apartment after leaving a bar when the eastbound Honda struck both of them. The survivor was severely injured but is in stable condition now, Wessing said.

The Honda passed another vehicle after the collision, and that driver provided police with the description.

The men, both 25, did not carry proper identification but their friends arrived at the scene after the crash and offered their names. Police are tracking down relatives before they release the names, Wessing said.

The Honda’s driver faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, which is a felony.

Anyone with information about the vehicle or the collision can call Mesa police at (480) 644-2211.
