It is nerve wracking enough to send your child to another state for a sports camp without your supervision, but when the very spot he is located starts making national news because of evacuations that’s a little different.
Welcome to Mike Bambic’s world.
The Ahwatukee Foothills father sent his son, Alex, to the Olympic Training Center for some incredible wrestling experience, but now that the wild fires are ripping through Colorado Springs the whole trip has become a lot harder to watch from afar as the images take over social media and television reports.
“I’ve set up some contingency plans to drive and pick him up if I have to because you can’t fly out,” Bambic said. “I’ve been in contact with the coaches to make sure everything is OK and I’ve talked to Alex every three or four hours.”
The younger Bambic is joined by fellow Arizonans Robbie Mathers, a Desert Vista graduate, and Mesa Mountain View’s Seth Monty.
The great opportunity quickly has become a parent’s worst nightmare.
“It’s really a situation you have no control over so that makes it hard,” Mike Bambic said. “You just stay in contact as best as you can and hope everything is OK.”
