The East Valley Recycling Alliance, Trex, Bashas’ and Food City supermarkets, as well as the City of Mesa Solid Waste Management Department, will host the “Bench the Bag” Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge now through March 31.

Mesa elementary schools can participate in this year’s competition by collecting plastic grocery bags, bread bags, dry cleaner bags, shrink wrap and department store bags.

The winning school will be determined by taking the total weight of the collected plastic bags and dividing it by the number of students at the school. The school that collects and recycles the most pounds of plastic bags will receive the 2014 City of Mesa Earth Day Award.

The plastic bags that are collected will be taken to a local Bashas’ or Food City supermarkets. Bashas’ will send the bags to Trex for processing.
