A custom photo lab that has served customers for more than 40 years is closing Friday.

Colormark Custom Photo Lab, located at 2212 E. McDowell Road since the late 1960s, has experienced a drop of at least 50 percent of its business in the last couple of years during a bad economy. Added to that, new technology and digital photo programs have kept photography buffs at home to do their own work, said Paul Scotti, Colormark’s manager for the last eight years.

Through the years, Colormark has provided custom photo services for portraits and prints as well as photo restoration services. The business kept up with advances in digital technology, but will close at 5 p.m. Friday. Customers can come in through next week to pick up any orders or work they have had done.

“We just didn’t have enough business, and we’re closing mostly because of the economy,” Scotti said. “We’re more of a luxury type of service, a type of business where people don’t have to have things done like family portraits. Nowadays, people leave it to do for later, and later never comes.

“We could’ve advertised a little better, but there wasn’t money to do that, either.”

Colormark is owned by Paul Taylor and Massachusetts-based Liska Imaging, which have maintained the original east Phoenix location throughout its operation.

Photomark, a retail portion of the business next door to Colormark that also is owned by Taylor and sells cameras, film and other photography supplies and equipment, will remain open.
