While some states could not participate in the contest because of rules, regulations, and game and tax laws, Cabela's and its promotion partner Keep America Fishing expect the event to give many people a good excuse to spend time on waters across the country. Per the mission of Keep America Fishing, both groups hope an increase in anglers will result in more attention being paid to conservation matters like promoting clean water and restoring fish populations.
But in order to qualify for the winnings, participants must register online. And to be eligible for the maximum payout - more than doubling the value of the million-dollar fish - anglers must use gear from contest sponsors including an Abu Garcia reel spooled with Berkley line, Costa sunglasses and Sperry Top-Sider shoes.

In celebration of the company's 50th anniversary this year, the 50th tag to be redeemed will earn the winner a $10,000 Cabela's shopping spree in a store or online. There are also additional prizes for the first tag redeemed in each participating state.
