Fuel prices have jumped statewide just over a penny in the last week, according to AAA Arizona. In the East Valley, the average gas price Thursday was $2.878, an increase of 1.4 cents from the previous week.

Statewide, Thursday's fuel price was $2.890. Nationwide, prices increased by nearly 3 cents to $3.013 per gallon. The last time the nationwide fuel price was this high was in October 2008.

The national average has never spent the Christmas holiday above the $3 mark, the AAA release states.

"Despite paying 30 cents more per gallon compared to last year, 1.8 million Arizonans will take to the road before the year is through," said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. "While pump prices are likely to edge higher over the holiday weekend, higher gas prices are not going to keep Arizonans off the road for the year-end holidays."

Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high state fuel averages at $2.752 and $2.999 per gallon, respectively. Colorado and California hold these extremes for the lower 48 states at $2.755 and $3.281 per gallon, respectively. Currently, 28 states, including the District of Columbia, hold averages above the $3 mark, while 13 states have lower fuel averages than Arizona.
