Eighty-eight Arizona teachers achieved National Board Certification this year. The state ranked 19th nationwide in the number of new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) and 19th in the total number of NBCTs over time, with 769. The voluntary assessment program is designed to develop, recognize and retain accomplished teachers. Certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that takes one to three years to complete.

Five Gilbert Unified School District teachers obtained National Board Certification this year, bringing the district total to 103, the most of any district in the state. Kyrene Elementary School District added three, bringing its total to 39, the fifth highest in the state.
