Businessman Wil Cardon kicked off his campaign for the Senate in Sun City on Tuesday, emphasizing job creation and illegal immigration as his top platform issues.

“At first I wasn’t running,” Cardon said, adding he thought other business leaders would step up to run for the seat that will be vacated by Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. “I’m not a career politician.”

Arizona, Cardon believes, needs somebody who understands how to create jobs, someone with a career in business.

Cardon, an Arizona native, thinks he can offer that solution, saying he has always been involved in his family’s business, an entrepreneurial investment company.

“We need somebody to get to Washington that will really get to work,” he said.

Cardon is gearing up for the upcoming year of campaigning with a tour around the state in preparation for the primary election in August, where he will likely face fellow Republican candidate,  Rep. Jeff Flake.

“Sun City is a great place,” Cardon said, adding he appreciates residents’ values. “I’ll be back in Sun City a lot more.”

Cardon said he hopes to focus on two major issues in his campaign, and if he is elected.

“The biggest issue is going to be the economy and jobs,” he said. “Arizona is hurting.”

The next topic Cardon said he will concentrate on will be immigration.

“We bear the brunt of a lot of the bad effects of illegal immigration,” he said, citing the states location as the reason for problems such as drug smuggling.

As for major concerns for seniors, Cardon said health care is the most central matter.“There’s a lot of health-related issues that need to be tackled,” Cardon said.

His campaign website advocates that the health care reform law endorsed by President Barack Obama needs to be repealed.
