SC Players mix fantasy, reality in ‘Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild’

The Sun City Players’ latest production, “The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild,” follows a woman who daydreams that she’s in her favorite movies.

Sonia Abrams, who plays the title role, said everyone could possibly relate to the character in the comedy, which opens April 29 at Mountain View Recreation Center auditorium.

“We’ve all had daydreams of what we want to be,” Abrams said. “It’s like being a little kid and playing pretend, and Mildred definitely does just that.”

Abrams said she loves the role because she has the opportunity to flex her comedic muscles and even take on iconic roles with spoofs of Scarlett O’Hara, Ginger Rogers and Shirley Temple.

“I grew up watching this stuff when it first came out, but I won’t say too much about it because then you’ll know how old I am,” she said with a laugh.

In tiny living quarters behind a candy store, Mildred Wild lives with her husband and has a 40-year collection of movie magazines. She escapes from reality into a dream world and pretends to be the actresses in her favorite films.

Joyce Hutchins, director of the play, said it’s a funny, endearing show.

“When Mildred can’t deal with life sometimes, she goes into a dream world and I think we all have just a little bit of escapism in us,” Hutchins said.

Hutchins said it’s been a technical challenge to pull off the show, which shifts from the real world to dream sequences on a regular basis.

“That was one of the biggest obstacles I had to tackle, but I believe I accomplished it,” she said. “You’ll have to see the show to know how we pull it off.”

In addition, Hutchins said she has some great costumes for “Mildred Wild,” particularly the film clothes.

There are nine people in the cast, and Hutchins said each has great comedic timing, particularly Abrams, who has performed a number of shows with the Sun City Players.

“Sonia is an excellent comedian and knows how to get the job done,” she said.
