Fresh Start Women's Foundation in Phoenix is reminding everyone that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and 85 percent of all domestic violence victims are women.

Of the almost 30,000 women served through Fresh Start's Jewell McFarland Lewis Women's Resource Center, approximately 40 percent have experienced some form of domestic abuse, past or present. Almost one-third of female homicide victims that are reported in police records are killed by an intimate partner. Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults. Fresh Start's "Women Together Against Domestic Violence" program provides services directly to women in the form of workshops, support groups, family law services and one-on-one social work services.

The Jewell McFarland Lewis Women's Resource center in Phoenix has a "Turn a New Leaf" tree on display in the lobby for the month of October. The tree features leaves that have messages written on them by the women of Fresh Start.

Throughout the month of October, Fresh Start encourages the public to visit and donate $5 in honor of domestic violence awareness month. Consider wearing purple, or a purple ribbon, in honor of a woman you may knew who went through this situation.
