When you are home to Arizona’s largest collection of exotic species, spring is synonymous with baby animals.
This season is no exception at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium with the recent notable births of a zebra, warthogs, patas monkeys, ring-tailed lemurs, scimitar horned oryx and many more. Visitors will see new arrivals at almost every turn throughout the 66-acre zoo and aquarium grounds as well as inside the baby Animal Nursery building.
Also on display is an 8-week-old baby male lion. So far, “Sampson” seems to have settled into his temporary home at the baby Animal Nursery. Like other large cat species, lion cubs tend to grow in size quickly as they transition from an entirely milk diet to one with meat mixed in. In the coming months, the young male lion will be moved to a large outdoor display and eventually, zoo managers hope to introduce him to Wildlife World’s year old lioness, “Delilah.”
The nursery has several rooms with large glass panels giving visitors viewing access to baby animals, at a much earlier age than ever before, as they eat, sleep and play. Wildlife World’s specially trained keepers have helped raise dozens of different species of wild and endangered animals over the past quarter century. By the indoor exhibit’s very nature, the young animals on display change from week to week, month to month, and season to season.
Finally, with Easter almost here, time grows short to see the pair of mountain lion cubs on temporary display at the Nursery. In just a few weeks, they will be traveling to their permanent home at a zoo in the Midwest.
The annual Easter Egg Hunt returns April 23 and 24.
