PHOENIX — Greg Stanton has taken the oath of office as mayor of Phoenix. Stanton was inaugurated Tuesday in downtown Phoenix as the city's 52nd mayor.
Stanton is a Democrat who worked previously as a City Council member and for the Arizona attorney general's office.
Stanton breezed past Republican Wes Gullett in November's general election runoff.
During his inauguration speech, Stanton pledged to establish a major bioscience center in north Phoenix involving the Mayo Clinic, Arizona State University and the private sector.
While running for mayor, Stanton said he would work to diversify the city's economy, improve funding for early childhood education and make after-school programs based more on academics.
