Higley Unified School District's administration has presented the governing board with cost-saving ideas for next year, including layoffs, two furlough days and eliminating art as a separate class for elementary grades.
Cuts may include staffing at the high schools, in gifted programs, for special education and a school psychologist. Teachers in kindergarten through fifth-grade classes would be expected to integrate art in their classrooms.
The district may need to cut around $2 million, depending on which budget is adopted by lawmakers.
The next governing board meeting is scheduled for March 24. State lawmakers are still exploring how to handle more than $1 billion in budget shortfall for next year, which begins July 1.
