Two weeks ahead of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Valley actress Patty Stephens will bring the 16th president’s wife to life on a Chandler stage.

“Pass My Imperfections Lightly By,” a one-woman play by Vaughn McBride, stars Stephens, a regular in community theater productions since 1999, as Mary Todd Lincoln. The two-act play is an exploration of the often troubled life of the first lady.

“Her ego-driven idea of what the leader of the nation should be changed the White House forever,” according to playwright McBride.

Todd’s role in Lincoln’s rise to power, the horror of his assassination, and her eventual confinement to an insane asylum are brought to light in Stephens’ performance.

The show is a one-night-only encore presentation of the play produced by Command Performers. Headed by Gilbert’s Kenny and Karen Jezek, Command specializes in family friendly theater. The Lincoln play is recommended for teenagers through adults.

DETAILS >> 7 p.m. Friday. Sunbird Golf Resort, 6250 S. Sunbird Blvd., Chandler. $15. (480) 632-6440 or www.commandperformersaz.com.
