Helen Evans stood outside of Palm Ridge Recreation Center in Sun City West Monday afternoon with a big smile on her face, ready to listen to the Oak Ridge Boys perform their hits.

Evans bought tickets in early November and waited in line for a couple of hours to hear the country music group.

“This was so worth it, and I’m so glad that they’re here,” said Evans. “I’ve been a huge fan for years, and it’s so wonderful to see them live.”

The Sun City West resident and almost 2,000 people were in attendance for two sold-out Oak Ridge Boys concerts on Presidents Day at Palm Ridge.

Before the 3 p.m. concert, many fans arrived at the recreation center in time to find parking and make sure they found their seats. The Sun City West Maricopa County Sheriff’s Posse assisted drivers to find parking spaces for the concert.

Many people wore cowboys hats for the occasion and western attire.

Sharon Vance waited with Evans outside of Palm Ridge before the concert.

“I still can’t believe that they chose to perform here,” said Vance. “I’ve seen many great concerts in Sun City West but this tops them all so far.”

Vance said she’s been a fan since the group first debuted as a gospel act in the 1960s, before hitting the mainstream in country and pop.

“I love all of their songs, especially ‘Elvira,’ one of my personal favorites,” Vance said.

Dorothy Sutton couldn’t wait to see the group and hoped to get an autograph from a couple of the band members after the concert.

Sutton, a Tennessee native, said her husband, Ed, used to be a neighbor to one of the Oak Ridge years ago before they hit it big.

“It’s pretty exciting to see how big they’ve become,” Sutton said.

When she heard about the concerts, Sutton said she knew it was important for them to be there.

“We love country music, and for them to be here right in our backyard is perfect,” Sutton said.
