Sarah Slattery won the P.F. Chang's Rock ‘N' Roll ½ Marathon on Sunday.

A year after Sally Meyerhoff, her teammate at Mountain Pointe long ago, won the full marathon, Slattery was driven to make an appearance after the tragic death of the Olympic hopeful in March while training.

Slattery, of Boulder, Colo., won in a time of one hour and 16.24 seconds.

According to The Republic, Slattery had to stop at one point because one of her shoes was causing an irritation. She fixed it and managed to come out on top.

"You just have to be tough, don't be a wuss," Slattery told The Republic. "Sally wouldn't be a wuss."

Slattery, 30, was thrilled to win at her old stomping grounds.

"It's fun to able to race at home with family and friends there to support me," she said.

In scanning some of the results, the only other name that I recognized from the Ahwatukee Foothills area was Desert Vista junior Brittany Tretbar, who finished 37th in the ½ marathon with a time of 1:31.18.
