A new technology available at the Arizona Animal Welfare League & Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (AAWL & SPCA) will allow people to view in real time and play with adoptable cats at the shelter from their computers at home.

AAWL & SPCA has acquired the iPet Companion, thanks to pet products manufacturer KONG Co., of Golden, Colo. KONG has installed the iPet Companion in AAWL & SPCA’s new Sonia Breslow Adoption Center at 40th Street and Washington in Phoenix.

The shelter is one of the first facilities nationwide that KONG has selected for installation as part of its “Pets Need to Play” campaign, aimed at increasing adoptions of shelter animals.

The iPet Companion allows any online user to play with animals remotely by controlling unique robotic toys with a few clicks of a mouse. A camera captures the action and lets users watch the video live as the cats chase, jump, pounce on and grab at the toys.

AAWL & SPCA also is celebrating Adopt a Shelter Cat Month by waiving adoption fees on adult cats through June 30. The adoption fee for kittens has been reduced to $50. All cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
