Chandler police say a California transient has been arrested in connection with a 2004 sexual assault case.
Santos Basillio O’Dell, 32, was arrested Feb. 2 in Newport Beach, Calif., after a sample of his DNA submitted to a national database matched evidence collected in the 2004 rape, kidnapping and robbery in Chandler. O’Dell is awaiting an extradition proceedings to face charges in Arizona.
Authorities in California’s Orange County collected the DNA sample from O’Dell after he violated an order of protection by sending his then-wife text messages and harassing phone calls. He pleaded guilty April 7 to one misdemeanor count of violation of a protection order.
The database alerted Chandler detectives to a possible link in their cold case, and they obtained an arrest warrant and began seeking O’Dell, who was living as a transient.
