A free concert by the local female-fronted cover band Aztex will kick off the grand opening of Guitar Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1. The new store is at 1652 S. Val Vista Drive in Mesa.

The all-ages event will include hands-on access to instruments, an Elvis impersonator and giveaways.

Mesa's Guitar Center is part of a new wave of Guitar Center stores that feature expanded recording and music lesson spaces, which allow the store to offer more classes, special programs and new opportunities for local musicians.

Its Music Mentor program is a series of free workshops on rotating topics held every Wednesday and Saturday. The Recording Made Easy program is a four-week series of Saturday classes. In August, Recording Made Easy will focus on the ins and outs of GarageBand. Participation is first-come, first-served, and registration is required.

Mary Walenta will manage the Mesa store.
