A man was indicted Friday by a Maricopa County grand jury on charges of murdering Chandler resident Nisay Kang inside a convenience store she managed at The Peaks at Papago Park apartment complex on the Scottsdale-Tempe border.
Jesus Arturo-Martinez, 20, who lived in the 768-unit complex at 815 N. 52nd St. in Phoenix, was charged with first-degree murder, one count of third-degree burglary, one count of robbery and one count of kidnapping, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Arturo-Martinez confessed to Phoenix police that he entered the mini mart the morning of May 25 and allegedly used a pair of scissors to kill the 36-year-old woman who owned and managed the store with her husband since December.
Arturo-Martinez is being held in the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail without bond, and is scheduled to appear for the arraignment in Maricopa County Superior Court on June 11. He is a native of Mexico and a permanent legal resident of the United States, according to Virginia Kice, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman.
Funeral services for Kang will be at noon Saturday at Tempe Mortuary, 405 E. Southern Ave. Interment will follow at Paradise Memorial Crematory, 6300 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale.
