Recreation expo events fill El Mirage park

The Luke West Valley Recreation Committee (a subcommittee of the Luke West Valley Council) will lead its fifth annual Recreation Expo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at  Gateway Park, 10100 N. El Mirage Road, El Mirage.

The Expo will feature displays and informational booths all focused on fun, healthy ways to enjoy recreation in the West Valley.

Events this year include a pet expo with weiner and Chihuahua dog races, Animal Fashion Show, adoption and rescue booths, vaccines, micro chipping, police K-9 demonstrations from Avondale, Tolleson and Luke AFB and new this year a sanctioned flyball competition. Flyball is like “drag racing with dogs” and much more.

Also included are youth art contest with the theme “Me and My Pet,” a pulse boardshop skateboard contest, stage entertainment with a DJ and games with prizes.

Kids can enjoy a water slide, bouncer, balloon twister, face painter, pony rides, petting zoo, climbing wall and more.

New too is the Best of the West Firehouse Chili Cook Off, inviting all the cities’ fire stations to compete against each other for the best chili recipe.  The public will be 50 percent of the votes. The judges, Tolleson Mayor Adolfo Gamez and Christopher Reams, director of PRLD, City of Avondale, are the other 50 percent.

Sport stars can compete in Aquafina Pitch, Hit & Run competition.    Calling all “Aces”, “Sluggers” and “Base Stealers” for boys and girls ages 7-14 as of July 17, 2011.  Participants have a chance to advance through four levels of competition including National Finals at the MLB All-Star Game. 

Join the cities of Avondale, Buckeye, El Mirage, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Surprise and Tolleson, Maricopa County Parks and Luke Air Force Base for information on all their activities, sports and events. 

Admission is free to the public. There is a cost for food, drinks and some activities
