About 30 firefighters from three departments responded this morning to a house fire in Youngtown that left one firefighter injured.

Sun City Fire Chief Jim Haner said the call came in around 7:56 a.m., with the first engine arriving at the blaze in the 11300 block of North 113th Avenue in less than four minutes.

“The first engine on scene saw smoke around the back of the house,” he said. “They reported a car and a shed on fire in the backyard, as well as the back of the house — the Arizona Room, I believe.”

Smoke from the fire could be seen more than two miles away.

In addition to the Sun City Fire Department, firefighters and apparatus from Peoria and El Mirage responded, with one El Mirage firefighter suffering an injury.

“We had power lines go down in the backyard,” Haner said. “An El Mirage firefighter came in close contact with them.”

The firefighter’s injuries are not believed to be serious, he said. The firefighter was taken to Banner Boswell Medical Center.

“He says he is OK, but he’s being treated just to be sure,” Haner said.

The fire was under control by 8:20, though the cause is yet to be determined.

“We know what was on fire, but we don’t know what was on fire first,” Haner said. “And we won’t know until we start the investigation.”

Clark Still, who lives next door to the home, said he woke up and looked out a window, at first unsure of what he was seeing.

“It looked like a dust storm,” he said. “But I looked again from a different window and I saw flames, so I called 911. Someone had already called it in.”

Still said he is worried his home may have smoke damage, though he was not sure because as of 8:30 he was still not allowed to enter his home.

“It didn’t look too bad at first,” he said. “But it got bad enough that flames were on my side of the fence. I was getting worried there.”
