Arizona State University is currently ranked 78th in the world by the Center for World-Class Universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University after moving up from the 81st spot.

The university has moved steadily up after entering the ranking in the top 200 of universities in 2003. ASU also ranks highly in many field and subject categories.

The universities are measured by the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index, Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index and per-capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

University of Arizona has been traditionally ranked in the mid-70s, but is currently ranked at 80.

The top five are Harvard, Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Cambridge in England. ASU ranked 22nd among all public universities in the United States.
