Illness is often portrayed as a war. We fight cancer; battle heart disease; combat colds; and wrestle with pain.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 16, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center and the Sun Health Foundation will sponsor a free event that takes a different view.

The event features holistic health and healing therapies such as Reiki massage, acupuncture, healing harp music, pet therapy, laughter therapy and other alternative health treatments. Information will be shared about how these therapies have the potential to complement traditional medicine.

Capping off the day will be a keynote address by Dr. Gladys McGarey. Known as the “Mother of Holistic Medicine,” McGarey has spent her life expanding the knowledge and application of holistic health principles through scientific research and education. Her talk, “From Lust to Dust,” will look at our lives through the ages and how to embrace wholeness and wellness at every stage. She will share personal stories that illustrate the innate ability of the body to heal and the significance of spirituality in the healing process.

“We are very excited to host this day of holistic health at Banner Del E. Webb,” said Michelle Winters, CNO of the nonprofit hospital. “We realize that healing takes place on many levels and educating our community to all the possibilities, especially practices that help complement what we do here at the hospital is important. I am delighted that Dr. McGarey is joining us and bringing her wealth of knowledge and perspective to the day.”

“Providing excellent patient care overall often means offering programs and services that afford non-medical benefits to healing, too,” said Sun Health CEO Ron Guziak. “As the philanthropic partner for Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, naturally Sun Health is delighted to support this event.”

Participants will have tables in the healing garden, where the community can learn about the various therapies. In the auditorium, attendees can hear overviews of the therapies presented and McGarey’s talk. A light lunch of healthy finger foods and beverages will be served.

To attend this free lecture, which will be at the hospital, 14502 W. Meeker Blvd., Sun City West, call 602-230-CARE (2273).
