A 22-year-old man police say was seen on surveillance video about four months ago installing a computer device on an ATM machine that would allow him to skim money from other peoples’ accounts has been arrested in connection with the crime.

Acting on a tip, members of Tempe’s criminal and apprehension surveillance team arrested Ray Camez of Phoenix last week on suspicion of computer tampering-related offenses for placing a skimming device on the ATM at a branch of US Bank, 2060 E. Rio Salado Parkway, June 5. Moments after Camez placed the device on the ATM, police said, a customer discovered it when he tried to use the machine.

An ATM skimmer is a small, portable card reader. After an unsuspecting customer enters their account information, the skimmer records the information, allowing the thief to later make a duplicate card to make withdraws from the account.

When Camez was arrested in the 4000 block of West Southern Avenue in Phoenix, officers discovered he had a number of stolen credit card numbers, indicating he had committed other skimming activity, police said.

In addition to the computer tampering offenses, Camez also is facing charges of aggravated identity theft and forgery, police said.
