DV hosting state track meets this weekend

The best track athletes in the state will be on display at the best track in the state this weekend.

Desert Vista High School is hosting the Class 5A-Division I and 5A-II state championship meets Saturday, with events starting at 4:30 p.m. lasting until around 10 that night.

"If anybody has any memories from high school of running track or seeing track, I really encourage the community to come in, and not just encourage Desert Vista athletes, but just encourage high school athletes in general," said DV co-coach Chris Hanson.

"The more community members we can get to come out and support a state meet like this, I'd love to see the stands filled with community members. That's the coolest part about it."

Desert Vista's boys team is not only the defending 5A-I champion, but the defending national champion as scored by the Nike Web Nationals. Mountain Pointe features the likes of Will Claye, who holds the nation's top mark in the triple jump, and Michael Woodham, a contender in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

"The state of Arizona, in track and field, has just made incredible strides toward really becoming a national power state," said DV co-coach Ryan Stanley, "There are just some amazing marks."
