Pumpkin euthanized Thursday
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Pumpkin, the pit bull that attacked an Ahwatukee Foothills woman in April, was euthanized Thursday, following a May 2 court order by Phoenix Municipal Judge Gloria Ybarra.
Court records show that Pumpkin, along with Lucy and Boomer were being walked by their owner, Jamie Delluomo, 43, when the dogs broke the leash the three were on. With Pumpkin in the lead the three charged Christene Meyers, 59, and her two Yorkshire terriers who were taking their daily walk near Kyrene de la Esperanza Elementary School April 17.
Pumpkin ripped the stomach and intestines out of one of the Yorkies, Nora, and then locked onto Myeres' arm, resulting in serious injuries.
But right to the end Delluomo and her mother Deloris argued that Pumpkin was gentle and well behaved.
"This was an accident, and accidents happen in this imperfect world," said Deloris Delluomo on Wednesday.
She said they were attempting to hire a new attorney and hoped to file an appeal this week.
But she also said that Pumpkin was getting frustrated being kept in a small cage at the Animal Care and Control facility and that if an appeal would take weeks, then her daughter would allow Pumpkin to be euthanized to keep the dog from suffering in the cage.
"We wont put Pumpkin through that," Deloris said on Wednesday.
Attempts to contact Deloris Delluomo on Thursday were unsuccessful.
Stories about Pumpkin being destroyed have riled some pit-bull supporters, including one who wrote on a blog that Meyers' Yorkies should be killed if Pumpkin was euthanized.
"Its not about pit bulls, it's about a vicious unprovoked attack," said Meyers.
