Girl Scout cookies going global

Brownies from Troop 1145 have decided to go global in their annual door-to-door cookie drive to satisfy American troops overseas who crave Thin Mints, Tagalongs and other varieties of Girl Scout cookies.

Troop leader Kay Moroz and her Brownies came up with the idea to ship their cookies overseas last year, and they received letters of thanks from troops happy to have a taste of home in their far-off locales.

“Last year several girls in our troop had relatives serving overseas, and they thought it would be a good place to send cookies,” Moroz said.

When sending the cookies overseas, the Brownie troop found that the shipping cost to send one box of cookies is about $1.

“Individual boxes of cookies can be purchased for $4 per box, but we have also created packages that include a $1-per-box donation to help us cover the cost of shipping,” Moroz said. “These packages sell for $25 or $50 and include five or 10 boxes of cookies and $5 or $10 for freight, respectively.”

Troop 1145 originally had a goal to send 500 boxes of cookies to troops this year, but they have already surpassed that and are working toward sending 1,000 boxes.

Moroz said the troop already has sold 700 boxes to be shipped overseas.

“People are on diets or whatever and sometimes they don’t want to eat the cookies themselves, but they’re happy to help out the troops,” Moroz said.

Although the Brownies are only in second grade at Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School, they seem to understand that they are sending comfort from home to troops.

“It’s important to send our cookies to the troops because they can’t get cookies where they live right now,” troop member Devyn Hickey said.

“Some of them die because they’re fighting for our country,” troop member Analisia Argenziano said. “We know they’ll love the taste and crunch of our cookies when they get them.”

Troop 1145 hopes members of the community will come forward with names of their friends and family serving overseas so that they can send more cookies to troops with ties to Ahwatukee Foothills.

“We have 600 troop names to send cookies to right now, but we’d love to have some additional names,” Moroz said. “We send several cases to each person so that they have enough to share for their entire unit.”

In order for the cookies to reach overseas troops, people should provide Moroz with names and APO Box information.
