In honor of its third year in Ahwatukee Foothills, Brilliant Sky Toys and Books will be throwing itself a birthday party the weekend of Sept. 25 and 26.

The specialty toy store is partnering with other AF businesses to celebrate the event and will feature storewide sales, free samples from places like Nothing Bundt Cakes, raffles and other party favors.

Owner Janet Hoo said the birthday event last year was their biggest day of the year, and that included "black Friday."

"Everything is discounted and we also have our sidewalk sale, where every item is discounted between 40 and 70 percent," she said.

For those looking to get a jumpstart on holiday shopping or just searching for a gift, Brilliant Sky employees will be on hand for gift-wrapping as well as on-site shipping.

Hoo said she prides herself on having quality, not "disposable," toys.

"We focus on developmental and educational toys, that's what makes us unique," she said. "When people think ‘specialty' they tend to think of something like FAO Schwatz. But we are adamant about keeping our prices low."

The average toy price at Brilliant Sky is $18.89, Hoo said, and they feature nearly 4,000 items that are less than $10.

"Definitely the biggest chunk of our tickets are in the 5 to 35 dollar range," she said. "We go scout out Target and Toys R Us and we aware of what other specialty toy stores are doing. We really want to make sure we are not overpriced."

Brilliant Sky offers a wide selection of educational, science-based toys which can appeal to children of all ages. Hoo said there are items throughout the store even for teenagers.

"Our niche is finding unique, fun, long-lasting toys," she said.

The birthday event will take place on Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their location, 4929 E Chandler Blvd.
