The Garage Public House bar and restaurant at 48th Street and Warner Road opened for business March 14 and is already going strong.
"We only opened a few days ago, we've not advertised at all," said Dennis Alexander, general manager. "We said we'd have a soft opening. It's been nothing like that. I've already got at least 15 regulars who are here at least every other day. Some more than that. It's one of those rare things where you came up with a great idea that seems to fit in the spot that you put it into."
Alexander says this is a concept Ahwatukee Foothills was in need of. The restaurant is meant to be comfortable and modern. Huge garage doors in the front open to let fresh air flow through the building. Large TVs show sports and shows for diners as they eat. Cement floors and red paint give the restaurant a rustic, yet contemporary, garage feel. The outdoor and indoor bars are well stocked with wines and beer.
"We have spent a lot of time on our beer and our wine and while not massive, variety is the key word," Alexander said. "It has been well received. I'm used to being part of concepts where bottled beer outsells almost everything else. Right now the drafts are out selling the bottles 10 to one just due to the variety. We also offer samples of anything you'd like to try first, which definitely seems appreciated. Our wine list is extremely eclectic and very value oriented."
Variety and value are a big deal at the Garage. It's something they strived for in their menu, which contains plenty of choices ranging from burgers and sandwiches to tacos and mini chimichangas.
The Garage hosts happy hour Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. when they sell all glasses of wine for $5. They also have reverse happy hour Tuesday through Sunday from 10 p.m. to midnight.
The Garage Public House is a joint effort of six Valley business owners. The Tavern on Mill, Zumba Grill and Phillys are all other ventures the men own.
"We spent a lot of time and a lot of effort," Alexander said. "The ownership was actually part of the building crew so that personal touch I think has definitely shown through. Everyone has been so complimentary about the business and the way it feels, how comfortable it is and what we've done with the outdoor space. We're ready for business. Still trying to catch up, but still ready."
