Walking into Kokopelli Dentistry in Ahwatukee Foothills, the first thing you might see is what looks like a kid's bedroom. In an offshoot of the waiting area is a room that is filled with toys and a computer for kids who aren't into magazines quite yet.
For the adults, where there was once a wine bar in the waiting room, now sits a coffee machine.
"I got rid of the wine awhile back," Dr. Steven Morales said. "But people seemed to enjoy it."
Kokopelli Dentistry does its best to offer a relaxed approach for people who dread going to the dentist. Morales and his staff offer a putting green, hand waxing and a "calming" room that features a massage chair and scented candles.
"It's no secret that people hate going to the dentist," he said. "We try to do everything we can to make sure their experience causes as little distress as possible."
Morales has been in the practice for more than 20 years and offers a variety of services and tests, including a laser cavity scanner that is much more efficient at detecting cavities, he said.
"The usual testing, with the Explorer (dental pick), is sometimes too thick," Morales said. "This is a better way and is more comfortable for the patient."
Also offered at Kokopelli is the micro-IDent, a test for periodontal bacteria. The test consists of five strips of paper that are placed in different parts of the mouth. The results test against 11 periodontopathogenic species to determine if there is a problem and how big it is.
"Before we used a liquid that was swished around the mouth and spit out into a cup," Morales said. "This test is much more specific and accurate."
