Q: Where are you from and what did you do before opening your business?
Originally from Omaha, Neb., I migrated to the sunny Southwest in 1987. Prior to opening Hot Yoga Ahwatukee, I have had numerous senior management positions, most recently at Pearson Education as the vice president of product management until leaving in 2008 to pursue my own business. I have had a dedicated yoga practice since 1995.
Q: Why did you open your business in Ahwatukee Foothills?
Key demographics supported opening in Ahwatukee including: population, income, education, profession, home ownership, median age, projected growth and an active community that places a high value on physical fitness - the perfect demographics for hot yoga. Coupled with the fact that there was not a yoga studio in the area made Ahwatukee my first choice.
Q: How did you get the idea to open your business?
Opening a yoga studio is something I've aspired to do for several years. Once I left the corporate world, I wanted to do something on my own that I was passionate about. Bringing this amazing practice to a community that would embrace the benefits was very appealing both personally and professionally.
Q: What type of merchandise/services do you sell?
We are a service business. We sell yoga class packages and memberships. We also sell accessories such as yoga mats; yogi toes mat-sized towels and hand towels, stainless steel water bottles, and coconut water to replace electrolytes lost in the detoxification process.
Q: What does your business offer that no one else does?
We offer a beautiful and spacious studio with a yoga room larger than 1,100 square feet. We combine 101 degrees with 50 percent humidity to create a healing environment for practicing yoga. All of our instructors are certified yoga teachers. Our yoga is designed for all ability levels; from first day beginners to advanced students. We are the only yoga studio in Phoenix that offers a filtered water station delivering clean, chilled water for filling reusable water bottles at no additional charge. We have a spacious lobby and restrooms with ample room for changing and full-sized showers for rinsing after class.
Q: How have residents of the community responded to your business?
The residents of Ahwatukee have responded very enthusiastically. More than 600 people have practiced hot yoga at our studio since opening on March 27, 2010. New students enroll daily.
Q: What does your business have in store for the future?
Clients can look forward to more classes, new teachers, special workshops and an evolving yoga practice that offers variations to continuously challenge the body, keeping the practice exciting and helping students reach their personal goals.
Q: Anything else you want the community to know about you or your business?
We offer new students an easy way to try hot yoga. For only $25, new students can take as many classes as they want in a two-week period. They can then enjoy a 20 percent discount on any class package if purchased before their two-week trial ends. For regular practitioners, our best value is an unlimited annual membership for only $99 a month.
