New hires in Humana's five Arizona locations required to be tobacco-free

Building on health-benefits company Humana's (NYSE: HUM) long-standing commitment to wellness and healthy lifestyles, Humana will no longer hire tobacco users in its five Arizona work locations, beginning July 1, 2011.

Humana associates hired under this new policy must not use tobacco products, including cigarettes, pipes, chewing tobacco and cigars, and must abstain from use while employed by Humana. Those who are not compliant must self-report use and actively participate in a tobacco-cessation program paid for by Humana.

Humana is also encouraging existing Arizona associates who use tobacco products to enroll in the tobacco-cessation program, which is available at no cost to associates. The custom-tailored cessation plan focuses on identifying individual triggers and what can help motivate a person to quit using tobacco. Associates participating in the tobacco-cessation program receive personal health counseling and free nicotine-replacement therapy.

Aside from the health and wellness benefits, Humana associates who are tobacco-free or are participating in the tobacco-cessation program receive significant discounts on their medical plan premiums.
