A fatal crash on Interstate 10 involving nine vehicles early Thursday left a 21-year-old man dead, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. Thursday on I-10 near Ray Road, causing a portion of the freeway to shut down until almost 8:30 a.m., according to the Department of Public Safety.

Aaron Brandt, a Desert Vista High School graduate, was driving a black Toyota pick-up truck down the freeway when witnesses said he began to swerve and ended up facing eastbound traffic, said Officer Carrick Cook, a DPS spokesman.

Brandt’s truck was then hit by a box truck, causing it to also spin out onto incoming traffic. A succession of more vehicles followed, including a semi truck being turned on its side.

Brandt was ejected from his truck and died on the scene.

At least nine others were sent to area hospitals with minor injuries.

An investigation for the cause of the incident is still ongoing and it was unclear whether alcohol was a factor, officials said.
