Phoenix police arrested Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington Friday morning after he was accused of assaulting an ex girlfriend in Ahwatukee Foothills on Wednesday night.

Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department said they responded to a call at an apartment near 48th Street and Warner Road around 4 p.m. on May 1. Police have been gathering information from the victim since then.

Police arranged a meeting with Washington and his attorney for Friday morning, where Washington surrendered himself to police, Martos said. He did not choose to speak to officers.

Police say it was reported to them that Washington arrived at the home of his daughter's mother in Ahwatukee Foothills and took their 5-month-old child for a regular visit. When he left the parking lot and the mother could no longer see the child she became alarmed, Martos said. When Washington returned with the child sometime later after a trip to Dairy Queen, an argument ensued, according to the police report.

The child’s mother told police that when she tried to take the baby back and go into a bedroom, Washington forced entry into the room. When he left the apartment the woman followed him to his car and Washington pushed her and threw her to the ground. She had some minor injuries, according to police, including a broken clavicle and some road rash. She was examined by a nurse at the city's family advocacy center.

When police officers arrived on the scene Wednesday Washington had already left.

Martos said it is normal for the investigation to take some time and that it is ongoing.

Washington was taken to the 4th Avenue jail, where he has been booked on two counts of aggravated assault. Bond has been set at $4,200.
