Tomorrow there will be a local fundraiser for Camp Soaring Eagle, a charitable organization based in Sedona that gives kids with serious illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and cancer a chance to go spend time in a fun, medically safe environment.

“We help send these children to camps that are created especially for them and their specific illness,” said volunteer and Ahwatukee Foothills resident Tyler Willis. “We provide weekend camps in the spring and fall and in the summer we fly roughly 45 kids across country to attend Paul Newman’s Camp Hole In The Wall.”

Willis first became involved with the program through her job at As You Wish and then began volunteering on her own time. She has been involved in the club for two years and has seen it grow from 200 kids to 800.

“Our goal is 1,000 in 2012 and I feel that is a goal that absolutely can be accomplished,” Willis said. “To see these children out of the hospitals that they dread going to, and out of a school environment that can sometimes be so cruel, is so rewarding when you see their smiles and hear their laughter at camp.”

Camp Soaring Eagle uses fundraisers like this one so that the kids do not have to pay to attend the camps. It costs them approximately $500 per child for the weekend camps and about $1,500 for the fly away week-long camps.

The June 4 fundraiser will be from 5 to 9 p.m. at Loco Patron, 1327 E. Chandler Blvd., Suite 108, where 20 percent of the proceeds will go to Camp Soaring Eagle. For more information, visit www.campsoaringeagle.org.

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Jessica Tueller is a junior at Desert Vista High School. She is interning this summer for the Ahwatukee Foothills News.
