Phoenix police are investigating a 20-year-old woman’s allegation that a man raped her in the bathroom of an Ahwatukee Foothills IHOP restaurant around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The victim, described as a Hispanic female, told police that a black male in his 20s followed her into the bathroom of the IHOP, northeast of Ray Road and 50th Street, where he overpowered and sexually assaulted her.

Trent Crump, a Phoenix Police Department spokesman, said police have identified a suspect but are not releasing his name. The suspect may have taken advantage of the victim’s inebriated condition, Crump said.

Phoenix Sgt. Steve Martos said the incident remains under investigation.

“The allegations made are serious and detectives are conducting follow up interviews with everyone involved to try and determine exactly what occurred,” Martos said.

Jennifer Pendergrast, a San Diego-based spokeswoman for IHOP, said the company is cooperating with the Phoenix Police Department.

“We are very concerned about what was reported early Saturday morning,” Pendergrast said. “The safety and security of our guests and our team members is our primary concern.”
