Stand for Children Arizona, a local non-partisan, nonprofit organization that advocates for accessible quality education for all children, has announced the passage of two critical education bills during the 2012 Legislative Session. The Teacher and Principal Effectiveness Bill and Charter Quality Bill both received strong support before obtaining Gov. Jan Brewer’s signature.

HB 2823, the Teacher and Principal Effectiveness Bill will improve every student’s chance to have a highly effective teacher and to provide teachers with high quality instructional leaders. It will support educators through more targeted professional development tied to evaluations that reflect their students’ learning and will recognize the individual needs of educators in individual schools.

SB 1424, the Charter Quality Bill, focuses on increasing the quality of charter schools by ensuring all charter authorizers consider performance in granting, renewing or revoking charters. The law does not mandate a specific performance standard, but adds to transparency around what parents can expect from a school regardless of authorizer. Parents often take their kids out of one school because they need a better fit or educational option for their child. Ensuring performance is a consistent focus across authorizers and improves opportunities for parents to find a good charter school that meets their student’s needs.
