The Arizona Division of Emergency Management (ADEM) is observing the ninth annual National Preparedness Month by spreading the message to Arizona: Get informed and be prepared.

ADEM is home to the Arizona Emergency Information Network, also known as AzEIN, which is the state’s emergency bulletin website. It is also a one-stop shop for all-hazard emergency preparedness information, like how to create a go-bag and what to do in the event of a disaster.

AzEIN is at and also broadcasts bulletins and information around the clock on Twitter (

ADEM is also repeating its Emergency Kit Cook-off, in which the public votes to nominate ingredients they might have stashed in an emergency kit and then to uses them to create a simple but creative dish.

The vote for ingredients closed Sept. 3, but the public can submit recipes until Sept. 30. Anyone is eligible to participate. Go to and look for the National Preparedness Month 2012 logo at the top of the front page for a link to the contest.

AzEIN is also co-sponsoring the annual just in case arizona Poster Contest with the Arizona Department of Health Services. Open to first- through sixth-graders, the contest calls on children to use their artistic talents to show the simple steps it takes to be prepared. Details on the 2012 Poster Contest are linked in the National Preparedness Month 2012 logo at the top of the front page of the website.

Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a proclamation declaring September as Arizona Preparedness Month to coincide with National Preparedness Month. Sponsored by FEMA’s Ready Campaign, National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort encouraging individuals, families, businesses, and communities to work together and take action to pledge to prepare for emergencies.

ADEM is working in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Homeland Security and the Arizona Department of Health Services in observance of National Preparedness Month.
