Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton announced the formation of a new task force within the city to examine the city’s ethics policies and transparency.

“It has been more than a decade since the city of Phoenix has considered or evaluated its ethics rules and policies,” Stanton said. “It is essential to review these policies, learn where we are strong and understand where we can improve. Accountability and transparency are key to good city governance.”

The Ethics Review Ad Hoc Task Force will be chaired by former Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley. Their duties will include evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the city’s ethics standards; making recommendations about documenting, implementing and enforcing ethics standards; evaluating best practices and providing recommendations on how the city can offer continual review of its ethics standards.

The task force includes 11 members appointed by Stanton. It will be staffed by Chief Counsel Dan Brown from the city’s law department and Janet Smith, director of human resources. They will meet at least once a month.

The task force will report its findings to the Public Safety, Transparency and Ethics Subcommittee and will sunset on Dec. 31.

The mayor formed the task force as part of his campaign promise to continually increase transparency at City Hall.

The first meeting of the Ethics Task Force will be Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the Adams Street Training Center at 140 N. Third Ave.
